Recreational/House Hockey
Our recreational hockey program gives players an opportunity to develop skills in a competitive environment by creating a challenging, fun, athletic team atmosphere that provides lasting benefits for each player.
There are no tryouts for our recreational hockey program.
What to expect
8U Mites: This program is run exclusively in-house at The Lou and Gib Ice Arena.
10U Squirts, 12U Pee Wee, & 14U Bantam ("Travel White"): The teams in these divisions will compete in the Buckeye Travel Hockey League (BTHL).
FAQ's for players participating in the BTHL:
- Travel will be required for away games and tournaments (various locations within Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, and West Virginia)
- Families will be responsible to pay for their own travel-related expenses
- Players participating in the BTHL must be registered with the Newark Generals by August 1st
- The BTHL provides competitive tiers. A seeding tournament will take place in early-mid September to ensure an appropriate competitive level
- The season will consist of 12-16 league games (depending on the final number of teams in each division) and 6-8 non-league games
- One non-league weekend tournament is also likely for those interested (tournament fees additional)
- Approved USA hockey rosters must be submitted to the league prior to the seeding tournament, therefore, roster changes will not be permitted following submission
- Regular season runs September through February (exact dates TBA), including pre- and post-season league tournaments

Appropriate players at least 2019 birth year or older who have completed at least one year of Learn-to-Play.

The season begins with practices in September and runs until the Newark Invitational in March.

Our home
Practices and home games are held at the Lou & Gib Reese Ice Arena.
Practices
Teams will practice two to three times per week. One Practice will include 30 minutes of skating fundamentals with certified skating coaches. Thursday nights will now be age specific fundamental sessions. Each slot will be broken up by age group (e.g. all 10u house & travel) with a concentration on technique and teaching the correct aspects of the game.
Games
League play will usually fall on Saturday or Sunday. Tournament play may occasionally involve a Friday or Monday.
Jerseys
Jerseys and socks will need to be ordered at through the NIHA Registrar. Players will be responsible for purchasing the required jerseys and socks, the cost is not included in NIHA fees.

Registration fees are as follows, please note, the registration fee does not include additional games, tournament play, uniforms, or travel expenses etc.:
- Bantam: $1,650
- Pee Wee: $1,610
- Squirt: $1,045
- Mite: $995
Extra Costs
Registration fees do NOT include jerseys, equipment, additional games, tournament play, or travel-related expenses such as gas, food, lodging, etc.
EQUIPMENT
Players should wear full protective gear in order to play safely and enjoy the sport. Equipment includes the following: stick • skates • shin pads • neck guard • hockey pants • hockey gloves • protective cup • elbow pads • shoulder pads • helmet with mask.

2026-2027
Registration for 2026/27 NIHA House Hockey
You will need a valid 2026/27 USA Hockey Number to register.
Fees may be split into six equal payments or can be paid in-full. (Deposit due at time of registration and then monthly beginning on the 14th of August through January)
